What is a UUID?

A UUID (universally unique identifier), also called a GUID, is a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits, for example 3f2504e0-4f89-41d3-9a0c-0305e82c3301. Version 4 UUIDs are generated from random numbers. The chance of two matching is so small that they are used as unique IDs for database records, files, sessions and more without any central coordination.

Frequently asked questions

What is a UUID v4?

A UUID made from random numbers. The version digit 4 is part of the identifier.

Are UUIDs really unique?

Practically yes. There are 2^122 possible random values, so collisions are extremely unlikely.

What is the difference between UUID and GUID?

They are the same thing. GUID is the name used in Microsoft systems.

Can I use UUIDs as passwords or secrets?

They are random, but they are meant to be identifiers. For passwords use a dedicated password generator.
