How to use the hash generator
- Type or paste text, or drop a file into the box.
- The MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes appear right away.
- Click Copy next to the hash you need, or compare it with a published checksum.
What is a hash?
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data. The same input always gives the same hash, and even a tiny change gives a completely different one. Software publishers share SHA-256 checksums so you can confirm a download was not corrupted or tampered with.
Which algorithm should you use?
- SHA-256 / SHA-512: recommended for checksums and security uses.
- MD5 and SHA-1: still fine to detect accidental corruption, but not secure against deliberate attacks. Do not use them for passwords.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get the SHA-256 hash of a file?
Drop the file into the box. The SHA-256 hash appears and you can compare it with the one published by the download site.
Is MD5 secure?
No. MD5 and SHA-1 can be broken on purpose. They are fine for spotting accidental changes, but use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for security.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Hashes are calculated in your browser.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. A hash cannot be turned back into the original data.
