How to use the sales tax & vat calculator
- Choose to add tax to a price or remove it from a total.
- Enter the amount and the tax rate (sales tax, VAT or GST).
- Read the net price, the tax and the gross price.
Adding and removing tax
- Add tax: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
- Remove tax: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
A common mistake is subtracting the tax rate from the total. A $120 total with 20% VAT is not $96 before tax: it is 120 ÷ 1.2 = $100.
